A message from our chair - the future of the library
Many of you will be aware that in 2023 FoWCL fought to keep Wallasey Central Library open and in its current location. You may have been one of the thousands of people who signed the petition.
However, as we feared, we now find ourselves in a similar situation. The Place Culture Report, that has been commissioned by Wirral Council, puts forward four options for the future of the Floral Pavilion and one of those includes having a library service on the site.
At a meeting of the Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee on Thursday, I addressed councillors on behalf of FoWCL and asked for reassurance that the library will continue to have its home on Earlston Road. We were told that no assurance could be given for the future of any council building, but we have been offered a meeting with local councillors and the chair of the committee to talk through ideas. You can watch back this part of the meeting (from 3:50) by clicking on the following image:
Ahead of this meeting, we are holding an open meeting on Saturday 5 October at 10am in the reference library. Please come along if you can.
Whilst the Place Culture Report is not in the public domain, you can read an outline of the options in this committee report.
Best wishes,
Barbara Hardcastle
Event - Book Sale
Our most recent book sale raised £196.27. Half of this will go directly to the library for new books whilst the other half will support FoWCL with other projects.
The next book sale is on Saturday 9 November, 10am-1pm and 2-4pm. If you would like to help on the day let us know, there are plenty of roles including serving refreshments.
We also always need help on the Friday before at about 4pm with setting up and extra pairs of hands at 4pm on Saturday are always welcome with putting stock back in the cupboard. If you can help please email - friendsofwallaseycentrallibrary@yahoo.com
Quiz night
We enjoyed another sell-out Quiz Night earlier this month raising almost £280.
This time our thanks go to Eddie Valentine who supplied the questions, acted as quiz master and, being a former maths teacher, totted up the scores!
Friday 13th proved to be a lucky one for the Trivial Trivia team who were our winners and were presented with a special trophy - well done!
Event - Dave Capener returns
After a highly successful talk back in May, Dave Capener will be back with us on Saturday 26 October from 2-3pm.
This time Dave will be speaking on Ingimund and the Viking Siege of Chester.
Tickets are £3 and must be booked via the Wirral Libraries Eventbrite page.
Audio books find new (care) homes
A huge well done and thank you to committee member Patricia who has been working hard to free up some space in the FoWCL book cupboard.
Last week Patricia dropped off selections of audio books on cassette to four care homes in the area with four more interested. We were also able to give a selection of non-fiction and historical novels to a resident who has recently lost his sight.
